Geophysical investigations were carried out on shallow alluvial aquifers in connection with sand rivers in Zimbabwe. The primary methods used were DC resistivity imaging and ground penetrating radar GPR. The investigated sites are situated on so called sand rivers, i.e. rivers with a seasonal surface flow.
Jan 01, 2006 1. Introduction1.1.. Alluvial aquifersAlluvial deposits are common in southern Zimbabwe, occurring as sand filled ephemeral rivers. The Mzingwane River is one such sand filled channel, with extensive alluvial aquifers distributed along its banks on the lower catchment and is the major northern left bank tributary to the Limpopo River in Zimbabwe, contributing around a quarter of the run-off ...
Typical Sand River alluvial aquifer in the low veldt of Zimbabwe within Limpopo Basin Estimated water resources potential in the basin ranges between 175,000 m3 and 5,430,000 m3 in the channels and between 80,000 m3 and 6,920,000 m3 in the plains

The sand storage dam can only be used as an additional water resource, because the storage capacity of the alluvial aquifer is small. However, when an ephemeral river is underlain by a larger alluvial aquifer, a sand storage dam is a promising way of water supply for smallholder farmers in southern Zimbabwe. KW - METIS-242774. Alluvial sand deposits along the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park are used as campsites and are substrate for vegetation. The largest and most numerous of these deposits are formed in zones of recirculating current that are created downstream from where the channel is constricted by debris fans at tributary mouths. Alluvial sand deposits are classified by location and form.
Difference Between Alluvial and Fluvial What is Alluvial The term alluvial is used to refer to sedimentary deposits consisting of a mixture of sand, clay, silt, and gravel that are typically formed by rivers. The sediment that makes up alluvial deposits is referred to as alluvium. The term alluvial is often used to describe sediments that are deposited beyond the

Mar 19, 2021 In Zimbabwe, riverbed mining was recently banned by the government. Riverbed mining spans from alluvial and eluvial, to diluvial mining. Riverbed mining has existed in the country for many years and flip floppingly, it has been legalized, illegalized and both legalized and illegalized. The current scenario is the latter.
work both hard rock and alluvial gold deposits. Seam gold is mined by excavating pits to levels where a dark coloured is then recovered by grinding the stone to powder, and then washing it. In Zimbabwe alluvial gold is mined by collecting gravel from the beds of streamsrivers and Paper ID ART20177929 DOI 10.21275ART20177929

Resistivity surveys showed that the alluvial aquifer has an average depth of 13.4 m. The alluvial aquifer is more enhanced on the upstream part of the dolerite dyke. The bedrock is metamorphic rock mainly tonalitic and granodioritic gneisses. A sieve analysis experiment showed that the alluvial aquifer is sand.
Sand rivers are ephemeral watercourses containing sand that are occasionally flooded with rainwater runoff during the rainy season. Although the riverbed appears dry for most of the year, there is perennial groundwater flow within the sand. This water flowing beneath the surface is a valuable resource for local communities nonetheless our understanding of such river systems is limited.
Jun 01, 2016 Sand rivers, also called luggas in East Africa and wadis in North Africa and the Middle East, are ephemeral watercourses containing sand, which are flooded with rainwater runoff once or a few times in a year Herbert, 1998, Hussey, 1997, Nissen-petersen, 1998.These rivers are the prevailing river type in the arid and semi-arid regions of southern Africa Davies et al., 1994.

The Middle Sabi Estate is located 80km from Chisumbanje and there are currently 3,500 hectares of sugarcane planted there. The soils on this estate consist of alluvial silt and sand deposits with coarse gravel or sand subsoils making for good drainage and their ideal suitability to pivot irrigation.
